is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.  We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Beedon, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.


  • Children in Year 3/4  swim once a week for 10 weeks. Lessons are held in the swimming pool at our federated secondary school, The Downs School.  Children who have not yet met the National requirements for swimming are able to join the sessions again whilst in years 5 and 6.
  • Children have 2 PE lessons per week.  1 is taught using the Real PE framework taught around  5 PE cogs: physical, social, cognitive, personal and creative.
  • One lesson per week is taught by professional sports coaches.  We cover a range of sports and activities and review our provision on a yearly basis.  In 2021-22 we are working with MNR coaching with a focus on outdoor games.  We ensure taht over their time with us, our children have the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities which promote therie wellbeing and fitness. Over the last 2 years children and staff have benefitted from professional coaches working with us in Tae Kwondo, Modern Dance, Gymnastics, Bollywood Dance and Yoga.


  • In our PE lessons you will see:
  • staff and coaches who are positive and help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun.
  • Children learning to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports.
  • Children who are proud to represent our school and who are proud to share their out of school sporting successes with their friends in school.
  • Children who use their PE knowledge, vocabulary and skills to evaluate their own and others' work.
  • Our most recent assessment of swimming skills by the end of year 6 (pre Covid) showed that 86% of children could use a range of strokes effectively and 86% could perform self-rescue moves.86% of pupils were able to swim 25m.
